Hey, do you know what are you doing, while taking the Sofia Green Hiking Tour?
You are retracing the steps of the pioneers of the organized tourist movement in Bulgaria, which happened 119 years ago, 27-28th of August, 1895.
Then one of the most famous Bulgarian writers, Aleko Konstantinov, arranged a tour to Vitosha's highest peak with 300 people. They started from the City Garden in front of the National Theater.
Konstantinov was a passionate traveler, writing a book about his trip to Chicago, seeing the Niagara Waterfall, describing his astonishment from the American culture. In short stories he writes about his travels around Europe. Famous for his ironic humor and criticism of the Bulgarian political and cultural life at that time, he found his death, being shot by mistake in a train. Many people said that his death wasn't mistake, but an act of the ruling power of that time.
Aleko Konstantinov, more know with his nickname Shtastlivetsa (The Lucky One) is the symbol of the tourist and hiking movement in Bulgaria. Every last week in August there are celebrations, which include retracing the steps of Aleko's group. In his honor a rocky island in Antarctica bears his name.
But you don't need to wait until then to climb Vitosha. You can do it every day with Sofia Green Tour.
